5 Tips on How to Take Care of Your Eyelash Extensions

Taking care of you eyelash extensions is extremely important! It is essential for beautiful, long-lasting lash sets. Having a solid lash cleansing routine is key to having the best retention possible. I’m sure most of you are already aware, but we actually lose around 2-5 natural lashes a day! This means those luscious, fluffy lash sets that we all love will eventually need a fill; and while there isn’t anything you can do to avoid this, there are a few things you can do to ensure your eyelash extensions will last as long as possible.

Follow these 5 eyelash extension tips for longer lasting lash extensions

#1: Keeping your eyelashes clean

Eyelash cleanser is key.

The absolute best way to ensure you’re going to have long lasting lash extensions is to make sure you have a proper lash cleanser. Eyelash cleansers that are specifically made for eyelash extensions have ingredients that gently and thoroughly dissolve oil and make-up buildup on your eyelid and around your eyes, and also keep your skin soft and hydrated. This is key for excellent eyelash retention. If you don’t happen to have a proper lash cleanser, don’t worry! We’ve got you covered. Check out our LashFX bath.

Using a lash cleanser brush.

When cleaning your lash extensions, we recommend you apply the lash cleanser with an eyelash cleanser brush. Gently wash in downward sweeping motions over the eyelids and lash line. Once you're done applying the lash cleanser, rinse your eyes with water until all the product is removed. After you’re done cleaning your eyelashes, let them air dry and use a lash brush to brush them back into their fluffy shape.

Keeping a lash cleaning routine.

Having the proper eyelash cleanser is extremely important, but it’s not magic. Having a proper lash cleansing routine is by far the most important. Washing your lashes daily is, by far, the most important thing you can do for taking care of eyelash extensions. Yet, for some reason daily washing seems to be an overlooked step. I cannot stress this to my lash babes enough. Wash your eyelashes! Keeping debris or oils off of your lash extensions is essential to excellent lash retention.

#2: Don’t expose your lashes to moisture or extreme heat

After your lash application.

If your lash tech isn’t using a super bonder or nano-mister, it’s important to wait around 24 hours before introducing any sort of moisture to your lashes. This can be a long time for some people to wait on jumping into a hot shower or working out but its something that unfortunately needs to be done. Introducing water molecules to the eyelash too soon could result in your eyelash extensions falling out almost instantly, and that’s no fun.

Watch the heat.

Maybe ask someone else to open the oven next time your chicken strips are ready. We have literally seen clients with singed eyelashes. It may seem like an obvious issue but it’s good to be reminded, especially if you’re new to lashes and have never had to worry about your natural lashes shrivelling up. Be sure you’re extra careful when sparking up.

#3: Avoid oils around your lashes

Avoiding oils is essential.

Making sure you avoid any sort of oil based product is an essential aftercare tip. It’s something that will result in much longer lasting eyelash extensions. Not following this tip can result in your beautiful lashes lasting only a fraction of the time they could’ve lasted.

Run from oil based products.

Avoiding oil based products means avoiding ALL oil based products. So many people take this as to avoid lash based products. Wrong. This means ALL oil based products that come even close to your lashes. Facial cleansers, moisturizers, and foundation! All of it. These products get sucked up into our skin and can spread to our lash follicles, even while avoiding the eye area. Even oil based body lotions can result in retention issues.

#4: Dont touch or rub your lashes

Stop playing with them.

Playing with our lashes is something we’re all guilty of. It’s something we do subconsciously and its hard to fight off, but it can do some serious damage to your lash extensions and natural lashes! Any force or motion applied to your lash extension might cause them to fall out.

Our hands are dirty.

Remember what I was saying about oils? Well that applies to our hands, as well. Our hands contain our bodies natural oils and if you rub your lashes, these oils will break down the adhesive and cause your lash extensions to prematurely fall out. No one wants to go to more fill appointments than they have to!

#5: Avoid sleeping on your lashes

The trickiest rule to follow.

Look, we all need our beauty sleep. I’ll be the first one to admit that when I jump in bed, I'm laying on my belly, sleeping on my face. If I had to sleep on my back, I would never sleep. I have no idea how people can fall asleep on their back to be honest. If you can, more power to you! You are ahead of the game and making it easier on your lashes. If you’re like me and can’t, this can cause some slight retention issues, unfortunately.

To all you face sleepers.

If you’re a face sleeper like me, I have good news. Not all hope is lost. There is something that I can suggest, and that is a silk or satin pillowcase. A silk or satin pillowcase can help your lash extensions through the night while you get your much needed beauty sleep, though it is still good to be aware what face sleeping can possibly do to overall retention.

These 5 tips will help with your lash extension retention.

But the absolute #1 thing you can do, is to stay up to date with your fill appointments! Keeping a solid 2 week appointment schedule is key to having your lash extensions looking full and fluffy.
